Why Age Calculations Are Tricky
Age calculation sounds simple but has surprising edge cases. Leap years mean February 29 birthdays only occur
every four years. Calendar months have different lengths (28–31 days), so "months since birth" requires
careful handling. The "as of" date matters — age can differ by a full year depending on whether you're
calculating before or after the birthday in the current year. Our tool handles all these edge cases correctly.
Leap Year Birthdays
If you were born on February 29 (a leap day), your exact birthday only occurs every four years. In non-leap
years, most age calculations treat either February 28 or March 1 as the birthday — the convention varies by
country and legal context. Our calculator handles leap-day birthdays accurately, giving you the correct
count of years, months, and days regardless of whether the current year is a leap year.
Custom "As Of" Date
The default calculation uses today's date, but you can set any "as of" date — past or future. This is
useful when you need to verify age at a specific point in time, such as:
- Determining a person's age at the start of a school year
- Checking age eligibility at the time of an event or application
- Calculating age on a past medical visit date
- Planning a future birthday when someone reaches a milestone age
